Career Information

Graphic design is the aesthetic arrangement of type and image in order to inform, educate, persuade or sell. Graphic designers plan and produce visual solutions to client problems within the constraints of time, budget, and technology. These solutions usually include printed or digital materials such as books, magazines, newspapers, brochures, letterheads, logo systems, posters, presentations and web pages. The associate degree program in graphic design prepares students for positions in this field, such as entry-level designer, freelance designer, and print production artist.

The Associate in Fine Arts Degree will prepare students to transfer into a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts program. Students will be provided with all foundation-level studio courses with a primary concentration in graphic design.

FAQs

How long will it take me to complete the A.F.A. Degree in Graphic Design?
The answer largely depends on the number of courses you register for per semester. Full time students take four classes (12 credits) per semester. Some Graphic Design students also opt to take some general requirements during Summer I or Summer II sessions. Please keep in mind that some of our courses are only offered in the Fall and some are only offered in the Spring. Please note that there are also pre-requisites in order to register for some classes (pre-requisites are classes that need to be completed in order to register for a particular class.). Check the About the Program page to view the full program curriculum.

Can I complete this program as a part-time evening student?
Unfortunately not. With the exception of Two Dimensional Design and Color and Design, our graphic design courses are generally offered as daytime classes only.

What can I expect in terms of workload/homework?
It has been estimated that a student in this program should dedicate (3) hours outside the classroom for each hour of class time per week. This may seem like an exaggeration, but consider that you are learning to use new tools, techniques and software. These skills require dedication of time and repetition to successfully master each task. Pursuing a full-time college education requires an enormous commitment to working on your studies outside of the classroom.

Can I transfer to a four-year program?
Yes. The Associate in Fine Arts Degree will prepare students to transfer into a four-year Bachelor of Fine of Fine Arts program. Students will be provided with all foundation-level studio courses with a primary concentration in graphic design. Transfer to a four-year institution provides a greater opportunity for long term success. Delaware County Community College has established articulation agreements with several area colleges. While articulation agreements make transfer of credit simple for general courses (english, science etc.), transfer of studio/design courses usually requires a portfolio review by the school for which you are applying. A portfolio review is used to determine placement (freshmen, sophomore) level in the intended program, and transfer of credits. As of 2007, nearly all four-year institutions that offer a four-year BFA Degree require either an in-person review of your artwork or a CD/online slide submission of 12 to 20 images representing your foundation and design work.

Students from the Graphic Design program have transferred to a number of four-year institutions, locally and nationally. These include:Drexel University, Kutztown University, Moore College of Art, Philadelphia University, Pratt, Parsons, Rhode Island School of Design, Savannah College of Art and Design, Tyler School of Art and The University of the Arts among others.
