Alumni Profile - Leah Collier '14
What year did you graduate from Delaware County Community College and with what degree?
“I first graduated in 2012 with an associate degree in General Business.”
Did you pursue further academic goals?
“Yes. I decided to pursue another degree, this time in Business Management, which I will receive later this month at Commencement.”
What are you doing now?
“Right now, I have been working in the field of procurement for the past eight years. I started with Corporate Procurement back in 2006 and transitioned over to Educational Procurement in 2011. Currently, I am a buyer at the College which I enjoy very much. I work with a great team of people who are not only friendly, but also very knowledgeable in this field. It is a strong team which produces great results and I could not ask for a better work environment.”
What are your future plans?
“I hope to go into business for myself someday. That was one of the reasons why I decided to pursue another degree in Business Management. The courses required, my professional background, and everything else I have learned in the classroom will be a stepping-stone that will help me prepare for my future.”
What is your favorite memory of your time on campus?
“One of my favorite memories is when I got to participate in a student photo shoot for an advertising campaign here at the College. I really enjoyed being in front of the camera representing such a fabulous institution.
Did you have a favorite professor or class during your studies?
“One of my favorite professors is Varma Mitchell. I had the pleasure of taking two of her courses in one semester. The first course was Business Communications and the other was Professional Development. Professor Mitchell takes great pride in teaching. She was very kind, caring, and passionate about what she taught and seeing her students succeed. My classes were at night, and as we all know, three-hour night classes can be very hard to commit to. However, Professor Mitchell made it so I looked forward to staying the entire time.”
What advice would you give to current students and Alumni to make the most of the education they received from the College?
“My advice to current students and alumni is whatever you’re pursuing, give it your all. There’s a motto that says ‘Follow your dreams.’ I have added to that motto which is ‘Not only follow your dreams, but chase them.’ You may face some trials along the way but just remember to keep the faith. Utilize all services offered to you to help you succeed in furthering your future goals. Take it one day at a time and in the end it will all pay off. Always remember that you can do anything you set your mind to.”
