Free Online Dialogues for Diversity Series Offers 'A Conversation with Heather McGhee' on January 31
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • January 18, 2023)—The New York Times called it “the book that should change how progressives talk about race” and the Chicago Sun Times proclaimed it “required reading to move the country forward.” In The New York Times bestseller, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together (One World, 2021), author Heather McGhee offers a powerful exploration of inequality and the lesson that racism has a cost for everyone—not just for people of color.
On Tuesday, January 31 from 5 to 6:15 p.m. online via Zoom, Delaware County Community College presents “A Conversation with Heather McGhee,” the latest in the College’s free, online “Dialogues for Diversity” series of discussions. Hosted by the College’s Center for Equity and Social Justice, the session will feature a discussion with McGhee followed by a Q & A session moderated by Simuelle Myers, chief diversity and inclusion officer at Delaware County Community College, and Tracey Ray Robinson, PhD, chief diversity and inclusion officer at West Chester University.
The former president of the think tank Demos, McGhee has drafted legislation, testified before Congress, and become a regular contributor on news shows including NBC’s Meet the Press. Now the chair of Color of Change, the nation's largest online racial justice organization, McGhee holds a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Yale University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law.
Delaware County Community College’s Center for Equity and Social Justice hosts an ongoing series of Dialogues for Diversity online events with rotating topics and formats. The Center falls under the purview of the College’s Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Dialogues for Diversity series provides a safe space for courageous and respectful community discussions about race, ethnicity, prejudice, discrimination, social privilege and other sometimes difficult to discuss issues. Previous event topics have included, “Discussing Race in Our Communities,” with special guest New York Times bestselling author Austin Channing Brown. The session is available via Zoom.
