Delaware County Community College Announces New Coaches for Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Cross Country
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA - May 1)—Delaware County Community College has announced new coaches for its Phantoms men’s basketball, women’s basketball and cross country programs.
Delaware County native Dwayne Saunders has been appointed head coach of men’s basketball, returning to a role he held from 2010-2013, when he posted a 55-22 overall win-loss record. Named Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) Coach of the Year in 2011, he led the team to a 24-2 mark and the College’s first EPCC title since 1996. He returned to the College last fall as the assistant director of athletics after a five-year stint at Elizabeth City State University, where he was director of recreation and wellness and coached men’s basketball for three seasons. A native of Chester, Pa., Saunders holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Lock Haven University and a master’s degree in Sport Management from East Stroudsburg University.
Also a Delaware County native, Larry Fain Jr. has been named head coach of women’s basketball. Fain played for Chester High School under the leadership of legendary Coach Fred Pickett. As a high school student-athlete, Fain earned First Team All-Delaware County honors. He continued his basketball career at Cheyney University and later at Franklin & Marshall College under the guidance of Glenn Robinson, the most victorious men’s basketball coach in NCAA Division III history. Fain holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Franklin & Marshall College and a Master of Business Administration from Eastern University.
Cara Fordenbacher will coach men’s and women’s cross country. She currently serves as the College’s coordinator of athletics and campus engagement as well as assistant coach of Track and Field. As a college-athlete at Eastern University, Fordenbacher competed for four years on the cross country and track and field teams. She was a member of the 2020 Eastern University Women’s Indoor Track and Field Middle Atlantic Conference Championship team. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Eastern University and a master’s degree in Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs from West Chester University.
“As we continue to attract competitive student-athletes to Delaware County Community College, we are pleased to have Coach Saunders, Coach Fain and Coach Fordenbacher on board to guide them,” said director of Athletics and Campus Engagement Allyson Gleason. “Our track and field athlete Tre McCray has qualified for the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association DIII Outdoor National Track and Field Championships and earned multiple Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors. Our programs offer great opportunities for student-athletes to build their academic and athletic careers.”
