Municipal Police Academy Graduating Class Completes 'Last Run'
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • November 22, 2022)—On a cold and sunny November morning, staff at Delaware County Community College enthusiastically cheered on soon-to-be graduates of the College’s Municipal Police Academy (MPA) as the cadets ran the last part of their training at the College’s Marple Campus. The cadets will graduate Wednesday, December 14 at 7 p.m. at Ridley High School in Ridley Park, Pa. The guest speaker will be The Honorable Linda A. Cartisano, President Judge, Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.
Running is a key part of the cadets’ training, and the “Last Run” is a tradition that demonstrates the strong bond between the MPA and the College community. Cadets are required to complete a rigorous, 920-hour curriculum that includes extensive instruction in firearms, physical fitness, self-defense, Homeland Security, scenario training and practical exercises.
This second MPA class to graduate in 2022 includes 31 cadets, including four female cadets. MPA alumni include Nether Providence Police Chief David Splain, the 2022-2023 president of the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association.
Delaware County Community College’s MPA conducts training for the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission program in accordance with Pennsylvania Legislative Act 120. The MPA has been serving the community since 1977, and also conducts mandatory Act 180 in-service training for current municipal police officers. More than 95 percent of the municipal police officers in Delaware County and more than 75 percent of the police officers in Chester County are Delaware County Community College MPA graduates.
