College to Expand Training for Low-Income Residents with $50,000 Donation from JPMorgan Chase & Co.
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • December 19, 2014)—The College accepted a $50,000 donation from JPMorgan Chase & Co. that will help fund training of low-income residents for careers in advanced manufacturing. The JP Morgan Chase Scholarships will be available starting spring semester, January 2015.
The check presentation took place at the College’s Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at the Marple Campus. Participating were representatives from the College, JPMorgan Chase, Penn Machine Works in Aston and Acero Precision in West Chester, as well as a representative from the Manufacturing Alliance of Chester and Delaware Counties, and students at the College who are studying advanced manufacturing.
In presenting the check, Mark Schrieber, Commercial Bank, Middle Market President of J. P. Morgan Chase & Co., said that their goal is to strengthen partnerships with institutions that train individuals to compete for skilled jobs that are going unfilled. The firm’s $250 million New Skills at Work initiative hopes to make an impact at institutions like the College that share their commitment to the immediate employment needs in their community.
To help create awareness of the career opportunities in manufacturing—including immediate job openings, job stability and family sustaining wages—the College is developing a comprehensive marketing initiative to reach unemployed and underemployed individuals, veterans, and traditional students. A portion of the grant will assist with this effort. Thereare 600,000 skilled manufacturing job openings, according to a 2012 study by Deloitte LLP. College President Dr. Jerry Parker said the number of open positions could edge up even further as Americans age out of the workforce.
The ATC is a 32,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility where the College offers associate degree and/or certificate training programs in Advanced Manufacturing, Welding, Carpentry, Plumbing, Electric, Automobile Technology, and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).
