New Music Concert Series Presents Scott Davidson Trio

(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)—Delaware County Community College’s New Music Concert Series presents Scott Davidson Trio on Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public and will be held in the College’s Large Auditorium in the Academic Building on the Marple Campus (901 S. Media Line Road, Media, PA).
Scott Davidson Trio features Lloyd Shorter on oboe and English horn, Roger Mgrdichian on oud and Scott Davidson on tabla and percussion. Informed by the music of India, the Middle East and other cultures, this trio combines beautiful melodies with various improvisation traditions to create a genre-defying tapestry of sound.
"Though all three of us have different backgrounds, we all play music where improvisation plays an important part,” says Davidson who formed the group three years ago. He says the trio enjoys interpreting music from around the world.
Davidson studied tabla and pakawaj in India and attended the Creative Music Studio, University of Delaware and Wilmington College. He’s lectured on classical Indian music at the University of Delaware and has given percussion workshops at William and Mary College, Shenandoah University, University of Connecticut, University of the Arts and Temple University. Currently, he is part of several ensembles and is writing a biography on Wilmington jazz musician Lem Winchester.
Mgrdichian performs regularly in diverse styles of music throughout the Philadelphia area. He hails from an Armenian musical family and his father and uncle (Roger and George Mgrdichian) were members of the Gomidas Band, a well-known Philadelphia ensemble in the 1950s and '60s. His past projects include performances for the United Nations General Assembly and the Algarve Classical Music Festival in Portugal.
An assistant professor at the University of Delaware, Shorter has received awards and grants from the State of Delaware for teaching and solo performances. He’s been a member of the Delaware Symphony for more than 35 years, and since 1990, he’s appeared in over 100 performances and recordings with the internationally renowned ensemble Rélâche.
