New Upper Darby Center Officially Opens

(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)—Delaware County Community College officially opened its Upper Darby Center, the College’s eighth location in Delaware and Chester Counties, on Friday, September 14, 2012. The Center is located at 1570 Garrett Road, in the rear of the Barclay Square Shopping Center, in Upper Darby.
At a time when college costs are escalating, the College’s new Center provides easy access to quality, affordable education and training to residents of Upper Darby, Drexel Hill, Highland Park and other neighboring communities.
The College invested nearly $2 million to upgrade the facility, the former home of the Star Technical Institute. The building features seven classrooms, a Learning Resource room and a student lounge. The Center, which has the capacity to serve up to 1,800 students, offers day and evening classes, including courses leading to an associate degree in Liberal Arts, Allied Health, Communications, Business Administration, or Education. It also offers courses in English as a Second Language, GED and SAT Prep.
During the official opening ceremony today, Neilda Mott, vice chair of the College’s Board of Trustees, described the Center as, “the latest jewel in the College’s continuing effort to bring quality, affordable education to the residents of Delaware and Chester counties.”
Dr. Jerry S. Parker, President of the College, said that with the help of a special federal grant the College also invested more than $100,000 on the latest in high-tech equipment, computer software and instructional materials and is now offering hands-on, free training in advanced manufacturing at the Center. Under this federal program, known as the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program, students are learning to be computer numeric control operators—a skill that the Pennsylvania Department of Labor identifies as in high demand by Pennsylvania manufacturing companies.
Other speakers at the Center’s opening included Margo L. Davidson, State Representative, 164th District; Thomas N. Micozzie, Mayor, Upper Darby Township; and Richard Bulla, a Clifton Heights resident and student taking TAACCCT classes at the Upper Darby Center.
