"I Speak American" Presented by Delaware County Community College
(Media, PA)—The Gallery at Delaware County Community College is proud to present “I Speak American,” a visual arts exhibition that will showcase the work of nationally and internationally recognized artists. The exhibition will run from October 28 through December 1, 2010. Admission is free and open to the public. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gallery, located in room 2305 of the Academic Building.
The artists will examine the visual culture of America and how it is represented, interpreted, and perceived as a global force. The exhibition will include various media, such as painting, photography, sculpture, installation and video.
The exhibition will offer different perspectives of how American ideals are shaping the global culture of politics, money, sex, race, class, gender and family. The United States comprises multiple, complex and interconnected demographics. Communication devices, such as, cell phones, the internet, iPhones, iPods, “iCulture,” language, clothing, music, political identities are just a few evident signs of how Americans use tools to communicate, connect and decode. By bringing together a wide variety of artists, “I Speak American” will re-contextualize how Americans and non-Americans showcase their identity. The exhibition will provide the public with an in-depth look at how various generations and global artists perceive America, revealing new insights and attitudes of how to “speak American.”
Major support for the exhibition has been provided by the Communications, Arts, and Humanities Division of Delaware County Community College.
The Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Delaware County Community College is located on Route 252 at Media Line Road between Media and Newtown Square.
