Alumni Profile - Leslie Truluck '04

Leslie took her time at college and gave herself the opportunity to study areas outside of her major -- actions she says resulted in personal growth and the broadening of her cultural horizons. Here are some personal notes Leslie wants to share with students.
What year did you graduate from Delaware County Community College and with what degree?
I graduated Delaware County Community College in 2004 with an Associate of Arts degree in Communications/Journalism.
Did you pursue further academic goals?
After completing my associate degree at [the College], I transferred nearly all my credits to Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. I competed my Bachelor of Arts degree in English & Communications in 2007.
Where are you now?
I recently started a new position as local editor of Springfield Patch here in Delaware County. Patch.com is a network of hyper-local community websites, each focusing on individual towns across the country.
What is next for you professionally?
I plan to continue my career with Patch and further progress my writing, editing, photography and video skills. This is an exciting time for journalism as it transitions into the digital age. Patch is innovative and game-changing in the way towns get local information.
What advice would you give to current students and alumni to capitalize on the education they received from the College?
While in school, I took tons of electives; I wanted to know something about everything. It helped me find my talents and figure out what I enjoy doing most.
Each semester, I included one class that wasn't required for my major that I had genuine interest in learning. I took piano, photography and art classes. These electives motivated me because I had something fun to look forward to in my schedule.
Although it took me three years to complete my associates, it helped my personal growth and broadened my cultural horizons which is a large part of the college experience. I'd recommend it to any student, whether they're sure of their major or not. I wrote for The Communitarian and helped around the radio station.
After I got my associate, I did an internship with a small weekly newspaper. Networking is invaluable. My intern experience got me in the door to full-time employment. College is what you make of it. You get what you put in.
