Alumni Profile - Vince D'Agostino '08 and Monica Sockwell '03
March 2012
One of the benefits of going off to college is that a student may get the chance to meet their future soul mate. The interview below, featuring Vince D’Agostino ’08 and his financee, Monica Sockwell ‘03, reminds us that love is in the air this month as the couple plans for their wedding later this year. While they did not meet on campus, their life together continues to include studying to advance their careers. An added bonus, the bride-to-be’s parents, William and Phyllis Sockwell, also dated while studying here as members of the first graduating class back in 1969. The Sockwell family are some of our most dedicated volunteers and their new son-in-law is joining a family with deep roots to the College. The Alumni Association wishes Monica and Vince all the best as their big day approaches.
What year did you graduate from Delaware County Community College and with what degree?
"I (Monica) received an associate's in general studies and Vince received an Act 120 certificate through the Police Academy. I am currently studying for a certificate and an associate's degree in paralegal studies while Vince is studying for an associate's degree in behavioral science-psychology."
How did you meet?
"We met at a mutual schoolmate's Sweet 16 birthday party in January 1997. Vince was escorting one of his friends to the party. I was friends with the birthday girl because of her high school locker location. We hit it off right away and talked the whole night. We became fast friends and our first date was May 23, 1997. Fifteen years from that day we will be applying for our marriage license! Vince didn’t mention it until years later that he had noticed me in the hallways over a year earlier and thought I was cute."
How did Vince propose? What made it a special event?
"Vince proposed on April 24, 2011, at one of the benches on the Promenade in Cape May, New Jersey. He had two Easter cards to give, one funny and one romantic. When I read the romantic card, Vince secretly dropped down on one knee. It was perfect timing, as he was able to do that without my noticing. He stood on one knee and proceeded to ask for my hand in marriage."
"The wood bench he proposed at was the same one we had sat on exactly six months earlier the weekend before we officially became a couple again. We had spent a lot of time there that day talking about our past, the present, and what we were hoping for in the future."
When will you tie the knot?
"We are getting married on Saturday, June 30, 2012. It would have been my maternal grandparents' 72nd wedding anniversary. The reception will be in the same room as my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary party, which was held on Saturday, June 30, 1990."
Any plans for life after Delaware County Community College?
"I would like to eventually work for a law firm that specializes in educational matters in order to compliment my master's degree in special education. Vince would like to continue his career within law enforcement."
