I cannot picture myself being anything but a teacher…specifically, a Spanish teacher! When I went to college, I started out studying science. Chemistry had been my favorite subject in High School. While still in college, I was asked to teach a Spanish class at a local high school. Well, I was hooked! I liked learning science, but I loved teaching Spanish! Teaching Spanish gives me the opportunity to share my culture, myself. It gives me the chance to both inspire and challenge students to communicate with people whose language is…my first language! In the classroom I try to find a balance between what students should know (all those verb conjugations and vocabulary drills!) and communication. At the end of each unit students need to show me what they can do with the language in the three areas that ACTFL ( American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) identifies as the three modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. This approach calls for the continual integration of teaching, learning, and assessment. As the field of language education continues to evolve, I strive to keep current through attendance at workshops, meetings, and webinars. I also read professional publications, such as as the Foreign Language Annals and belong to ACTFL.
