President Dr. L. Joy Gates Black Named to American Council on Education Board of Directors
(Delaware and Chester Counties, PA • March 3, 2023)—Delaware County Community College President Dr. L. Joy Gates Black has been named to the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body of the nation’s colleges and universities representing more than 1,700 colleges and universities, and other organizations in America and abroad. Dr. Gates Black will serve as a designated institutional representative of the American Association of Community Colleges for the term of April 2023 to September 2026.
“I deeply appreciate Joy's service to the ACE Board of Directors and dedication to helping ACE carry out our mission to mobilize American higher education for the good of our students and communities,” said ACE President Ted Mitchell.
A native of Texas, Dr. Gates Black is Delaware County Community College’s first African American and first female president. She has served the College since July 1, 2017 and plans to retire after six years as president on June 30, 2023. In addition, Dr. Gates Black served on the American Association of Community Colleges Board from 2019 through 2022. “I am honored to serve in this role for the American Council on Education and to represent the best interests of community colleges nationwide,”
Dr. Gates Black said. Dr. Gates Black holds a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. She is a U.S. Air Force veteran. Under her leadership, Delaware County Community College has made many significant advances and is well poised for the future.
