Perioperative Nursing Certificate Program
Established in 1985, the Perioperative Nursing Program is a six-credit certificate offered in the spring and fall semesters on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. at the Marple Campus. The program consists of two courses, Nursing 205 (NUS 205), a didactic portion and Nursing 206 (NUS 206), a clinical and simulation lab component.
Each week students are taught the basics of perioperative nursing and build upon these skills in small simulation lab groups under the guidance of an experienced faculty instructor. The clinical practicum is arranged with the assistance of a perioperative faculty member. A minimum of a 90-hour clinical rotation is performed at area hospitals in operating rooms or ambulatory surgery units. This rotation may be undertaken in conjunction with or following NUS 205. The faculty consists of experienced perioperative nurses dedicated to the educational needs of the novice perioperative nurse.
Upon successful completion of NUS 205 and NUS 206, a certificate of completion of the perioperative nursing program is granted.
Prerequisites for the Perioperative Certificate Program
- Current, active licensure to practice as a professional registered nurse in PA or the state in which you will perform your clinical practicum (NUS 206).
- Current FBI, PA Criminal and Child Abuse clearances (within 12 months)
- Current CPR certification
- 10 Panel drug screen
- Proof of immunity to communicable disease (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and hepatitis B)
- Negative 2 step PPD or QuantifFERON-TB gold blood test
